Blog
Short for "web log", an online journal, kind of periodic column on the web. A blog is a website that is usually updated frequently by its author, in a standard format, with the most recent entry at the top, and older entries archived. In order to be meaningful a blog should focus on a particular subject.
Becoming an online publisher
Blogging is communication that is usually opinionated (our blog certainly is;-), provides a different tenor than network news, regular websites or even message boards.
Blogs contain the filtered information of individuals that they consider worth sharing with the public. Many blogs get started by bloggers who are enthusiastic about how easy it is to start a blog. Many blogs also die very quickly again. The existing blog graveyard could fill an entire planet and is growing quickly.
Blogs are based on interaction, linking to each other, comments, conversation, debating.
A few more things to now
- Each entry has a unique URL, called PERMALINK.
- Entries usually include the option for allowing comments.
- Many great blogging tools are available for free!
- Blogs can generate a RSS feed which readers can use to subscribe, via an RSS reader.
- Search engines love blogs. They like sites that update often. Google has even developed
a separate page call Google Blogsearch just for searching blogs. Technorati is another great platform to find blog entries, including your own ones;-)
