Google Bombs - Google Bombing

Another word of rather violent character.

Google bombs make use of the way the Google algorithm works. Google puts special emphasis on the words put into the anchor text of a link.

Google can get tricked by a large number of links from different sites to a specific target site if the anchor text is consistent.

As a result you can get listed for a keyword that is neither on your site nor was every intended by you to be linked to your site.

It takes a large number of sites to create a Google bomb.

One of the most famous Google bombs was created for the keyword "Miserable Failure". It first targeted George Bush's Bio (www.whitehouse.gov/ president/ gwbbio.html) at the white house but then the conservatives returned the favor: At the time of this entry the rankings still show George W's Bio on top, but he is followed by links to Jimmy Carter's Bio and to Michael Moore's homepage.

None of these pages include the words "Miserable Failure" anywhere in their text or code.

Note

We might have mentioned it before, but the team at Google is pretty smart. They usually find a response for every attempt being made to dilute the quality of their rankings. You shouldn't be too surprised if Google bombs soon become a phenomenon of the past (on to Yahoo bombs?)

Comment

We don't think that Google bombs are all that. Therefore we did not hyperlink the word miserable failure to any of the above mentioned sites. We would be glad if you would return the favor and don't link the word miserable failure to conceptbakery. We simply don't feel worthy of this kind of promotion;-)

If you by any chance feel like linking to any of our pages we would appreciate a more descriptive anchor text for the link. We'll be glad to assist.
