RSS | Rich Site Summary or
Really Simple Syndication
RSS is a way of distributing dynamic content (content syndication), using the XML format, to subscribers of that content. In order for users to subscribe, they need to sign up for a RSS reader (news aggregator).
Bloggers use RSS to distribute their content, essentially 'pushing' content out to subscribers of the content rather than relying on readers to visit the site to determine if there is new content.
RSS is also useful for anyone else who publishes news or newsletters on a regular bases. Podcasters also use RSS.
As mentioned before RSS requires a reader to subscribe to an RSS reader before accessing content. The reader transforms the XML into a readable format. Browsers might soon have RSS readers built in.
Why RSS?
- RSS has a major benefit for the publishers of news: Instead of pushing them to the users via email and running into the Spam trap they can now offer interested users to pull the content. Much better.
- Web surfers have the benefit of having tons of websites of their choice bundled at one convenient location. Instead of visiting each single one they can see at their RSS reader who has new content. Beware of the information overload!
